 Mangifera indica, le manguier, est un arbre au feuillage persistant pouvant atteindre 30m de hauteur, et présente un port étalé, puisqu'il peut également mesurer 30m de largeur. C'est également un arbre à la longue durée de vie, pouvant atteindre plusieurs centaines d'années. La floraison est constituée d'inflorescences composées de milliers de petites fleurs jaunes ou rouges. Les fruits, de taille variable selon les variétés, peuvent atteindre 25cm de long. Les mangues sont des fruits tropicaux très répandus, utilisés aussi bien frais, que dans la composition des jus de fruits ou dans la préparation de plats traditionnels de nombreux pays Asiatiques.

Bien que pouvant exceptionnellement résister à des températures proches de 0°C, voire très légèrement négatives, le manguier reste un arbre tropical qui réussira le mieux dans les zones tropicales où alternes les périodes sèches et humides.

Utilisé en médecine traditionnelle dans de nombreux pays, comme vermifuge. Il a aussi des propriétés diurétique, astringente et laxative. Il traite l'hypertension artérielle. Les feuilles du Manguier sont indiquées pour le traitement des maladies respiratoires (l'asthme, bronchite).
Le noyau est utilisé pour traiter les coliques, diarrhée et dysenterie. La décoction d' écorce traite les affections buccales ainsi que les hémorroïdes ( macération de l'écorce). La sève est utilisée comme colle à papier en Afrique.
Le bois est commercialisé sous le nom de machang ou sepam, utilisé en ébénisterie. Sa teinte se rapproche de celle du noyer.
Mangifera indica: comprend plus de 70 cultivars sélectionnés (greffage) donnant des fruits moins fibreux.
